Production of reactive oxygen species and factors leading to their increase

Production of reactive oxygen species

Natural production of reactive oxygen species
2% of the oxygen that we breathe turns into reactive oxygen species. An increase in the amount of oxygen consumption due to exercise and the intake of various processed products dramatically increases the production of reactive oxygen species. Today, reactive oxygen species are referred to as “internal pollution”.
Factors in modern society that lead to an increase of reactive oxygen species
In modern society, stimulants such as chemical substances, electromagnetic radiation and stress are on the increase. We all have factors for the excess production of reactive oxygen species in our bodies.

Factors for their increase

Invasion of foreign substances (bacteria, viruses, etc.)
When a foreign substance enters our body, the phagocytes in our white blood cells produce reactive oxygen species that attack and kill it.
Various chemical substances
Chemical substances such as processed foods, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, preservatives, pesticides, exhaust fumes, contaminated tap water and tobacco also produce vast amounts of reactive oxygen species inside our body.
Various forms of stress
Psychological stress (anger, sorrow, despair, shock) makes the neutrophil in the white blood cells produce reactive oxygen species.
Vigorous exercise
Vigorous exercise such as jogging increases oxygen consumption, and thus increases the amount of reactive oxygen species produced.
*Moderate exercise improves cardiopulmonary functions and is effective in the prevention of lifestyle-related illnesses.
Exposure to UV
When exposed to sunlight, the ultraviolet rays disinfect futon mattresses and clothing. When bacteria and mold are exposed to UV, excess reactive oxygen species are produced in their bodies which kill them. Reactive oxygen species produced by UV may cause blemishes and skin cancer. They are also said to be one of the causes of cataracts.
Others
Reactive oxygen species are also said to be produced by electromagnetic radiation, X-rays (CT’s too), and stopping blood flow and reperfusion during surgery.
